What to Expect
High school civics was always wishful thinking. Our policticans like to spuout polictical rhetoric about how we are a nation of law and order. We like to think the government and our public officials are there to help. It makes for nice rhetoric, but in the real worl, our officials care more about getting through the day as easy as possible than they do about the right of things and the rule of law. This is not meant an an indictment of government. It is simply an observation about the nature of human beings. Public officials are our public servants and if they are not acting in accordance with our law, there is nowhere to look but in the mirror.
The courts are flawed. Of all the courts in the country, traffic courts are, by far, the worst. It is not because the police, prosecutors, and judges are bad people. It is because they are busy. They have this massive pile of citations to work through and if they are to get it done, they need to cut some corners. If they cut a few corners and no one rails at them in rightous indignation, they cut more. It is the nature of human beings.
This is not a condemnatin of the system. The laws in all the states are very well constructed. The corpus juris (body of law) is not the problem; that you and I have failed to police the police is the problem. Don't wait until you, a family member, or close friend is falsely accused to figure things out. Lear how the system works before you desparately need to know.
RoboCourts
The traffic courts are well oiled systems. 73% of all people who get ticketed just send in a check. 27% demand a hearing and at that hearing they are sent to a prosecutor who convinces 99% to take a deal.
Their system is slick and smooth. When you put a squeak in their wheel, they tend to be flaergasted and do the dumbest things.
If you trust the system, if you believe your rights will be protected, you are in for a very unpleasant surprise the first time you try to protest your innocence.
Knife Sharping
The system has been engineered for efficiency and that efficiency is seldom conducive to justice and fair play.
The judges and lawyers you find in these lowest of courts tend not to be the sharpest knives in the drawer or they would be out making the big bucks instead of working overtime in the traffic courts grubbing for dollars.
Often the judges and prosecutor knows less about the laws than you do. The incompetence in the traffic courts you will find embarassing.
